Capture Life Workshop: Mastering Your DSLR – Chico Photography Workshop

Seven years ago, as a mom of four little kids and a part-time blogger I wanted better photos of my kids, my life, and to post on my blog. I decided to learn how to use my DSLR (really use it….like, stop shooting in auto) and since then I have caught thousands of moments, documented my travels all over the state, country, and world, and built a business.

Maybe you don’t want to start your own business, but you want photos of your kids as they grow everyday, you want to add content to your website, you want to grow your blog or social media following, or you want to photograph your travels.

After having several people ask me about a workshop and thinking about it for awhile I’ve decided to go for it. I want to take something that seems scary (ISO? aperture?) and show you that it’s not as hard as it seems. Also, I want to make it super fun with food and drinks and gifts and continue on the community to grow and share the photos that we create.

Bloggers, business owners and multi level marketers, parents, anyone who wants to take better photos of their life and travels, and anyone who has a DSLR and wants to get comfortable with using it.

10 Amazing Places to Elope in the US

10 amazing places to elope in the US

In the past several years elopements are on the rise. Long gone are the days of an elopement meaning a couple running off to Vegas. These days many couples are choosing to forego the stress and expense of a huge wedding and focus on the things that are important to them- their love and commitment, a beautiful adventure, and possibly a small group of family and/or friends.

Elopements are an intimate and beautiful celebration of you as a couple. An elopement (or intimate or destination wedding) isn’t tied to a location based on the availability or convenience of your guests. You really can choose anywhere in the world to commit your lives to one another. Another bonus? You’re already on an amazing adventure together!

For the sake of this article I’m focusing on 10 amazing places to elope in the US (in no particular order). (A worldwide list coming soon!)

  1. Big Sur, CA – Breathtaking cliffs, the ocean, beautiful sunsets, and Highway 1- the American National Scenic Byway. Big Sur is a beautiful place to travel to (and elope) year round, but the peak season is from April to Octobe.
  2. Moab, UT – This town is full of crazy red rock formations and arches and is the outdoor enthusiasts dream. Before (or after) your wedding ceremony take some time to hike, mountain bike, zipline, raft, and more. The ideal time to visit Moab is the the Spring and Fall.
  3. Kauai, HI – Kauai is arguably the most beautiful of the Hawaiian islands. Much of it’s surface is covered by rainforest and is known for it’s its Na Pali Coast and 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon. Kauai’s weather is warm and beautiful year-round, which makes it an ideal spot for someone planning a Winter wedding, but wanting to get out of the cold.
  4. Sedona, AZ – Sedona is known for it’s red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls and pine forests. Sedona is ideal from March through May, when the temperatures are warm, but not scorching and unbearable.
  5. Glacier Park, MT – This National Park is full of stunning views in all of it’s 1 million acres. It contains a dozen large lakes, 700 smaller ones, and 200 waterfalls. The photo ops and ceremony locations are endless. The very best time to visit Glacier National Park is July and August when the daytime temperatures average in the 70s.
  6. Yellowstone National Park, WY – Mostly located in Wyoming, but also in parts of Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park is a gorgeous array of rivers, forests, hot springs, and geysers, including the famous Old Faithful. The best times to visit are Spring and Fall. Summer is also beautiful, but full of tourists.
  7. Yosemite National Park, CA – Another National Park  on the list (but definitely one that needs to be included) is Yosemite. Known for it’s giant sequoias, Bridalveil Falls, El Capitan, and Half Dome. There are magnificent views in every direction, which make for some epic wedding photos. Spring through Fall are all beautiful times to visit Yosemite. In the Spring the wildflowers are blooming and the temperatures are warming up. In Fall the leaves are changing, which make for spectacular colors. In Summer you will have to compete with the crowds.
  8. Cannon Beach, OR – Cannon Beach is a small coastal town in Northern Oregon known for it’s sandy shore and Haystack Rock, a monumental rock on the beach. August through October is the best time to visit when the weather is warm and clear.
  9. Olympic National Park, WA – Olympic National Park is located in the Pacific Northwest on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. The terrain includes mountains, coastline, and a rainforest, and the Elwha River. Like several of the other National Parks, the best time to visit is in the Spring and Fall. Summer is the high time, though, for visitors and tourists with kids being out and the weather being warm.
  10. South Lake Tahoe, CA– South Lake Tahoe is a resort city located in the Sierra Nevadas. It is known for it’s ski resorts and beaches and is full of beautiful hiking trails and lake views. South Lake Tahoe is an ideal spot for a snowy Winter wedding or a warm lakefront ceremony.

What locations are on your list of most beautiful places in the US? If you could elope anywhere in the US (or if you did), where would it be?

Michelle and Dustin’s Centerville Estates Wedding /// Chico Wedding Photographer

Michelle and Dustin had a gorgeous wedding at Centerville Estates in Chico, CA. Centerville Estates is located up in the canyon and next to a creek. Even though it’s only a few minutes outside of town it feels like you’re in a completely different place. The landscape makes for gorgeous photo backgrounds and we had so much fun wandering around by the creek.

Michelle and Dustin’s day was full of love, fun, and beautiful details (One of my favorites was their vintage cake topper, which was a family heirloom). These two are now a family of THREE and are enjoying life with their sweet baby boy.
